Before Progress so Far

The downstairs bathroom was also in need of some major (more than) cosmetic work.  The wall "tile" was actually plastic sheeting nailed on (and rusted around the nails).  The floor was in good condition, but not really to our taste.  The door couldn't open fully because the vanity was in the way.

Alyssa's Dad stayed with us and (because he is a wonderful Dad) started renovating the bathroom. That started with fully gutting the existing bathroom - removing fixtures, wall and floor coverings, walls, plumbing etc... everything really.

The next stage was starting to put the structure back, including making sure the floor was straight and strong enough for the marble tile we are putting down. Then Dad framed the new wall and door.  He installed new plumbing and a new vent (and connected all the plumbing in the bathroom and kitchen to the vent - something lacking before).  Alyssa tiled the bathroom floor, and Dad connected the new fixtures, all in time for Colin's parents arrival.  Current status is: finish tiling and grout, finish cement board around tub, finish wiring, vent the bathtub van, and then tape, mud, paint, and tile walls.

Once the framing was done and the bath was put it, we installed the marble tile floor.  We wanted to put in the fixtures so they would be working when Colin's parents were visiting, also so Dad could get back to Chicago to work on his house.  Alyssa cut the tiles and installed them over that orange waffle underlayment from Schluter.  The sink, tub, and toiler are Kohler and we used Grohe faucets.
Colin did all the wiring and installed the bathroom fan/light.  When he made the hole for the fan, several chickadees thought our bathroom might make a nice home, and came to investigate.  Andy came over to help us hang the ceiling drywall, and Alyssa got to work mudding (this is after covering up the floor of course).  Colin also hung a new door.
Alyssa primed over her mudding work, and then it was Dad to the rescue.  After finally deciding on and finding tile (cheaper subway tile and with Victorian base molding), Dad tiled the bathroom.  It looks great.  He also replaced the baseboard heater, which was too wide for the sink.  Then Alyssa painted the room in Restoration Hardware's Atmosphere Blue.
