Before Nearly There

The upstairs kitchen is generally a bright room.  Unfortunately, it was also a bit of a disaster.  Some construction cowboys had door a poor job.  The wall behind the stove is not straight.  The walls generally were in poor shape - rough, stepped, and marked with nail holes or globs of plaster.  The ceiling similarly had been poorly patched.  The cabinets and countertop were worn and the floor past it's prime.  Dad and a 25 pound bag of easy sand fixed the walls.  Colin re-wired the entire room, adding switches were there were none and replacing the existing wire, which sometimes had big chunks missing.  We put in new light fixtures.  Alyssa painted the cabinets and replaced the hardware.  Dad made some "origami cabinets" for above the stove, and laminated the counter.  Colin scraped off the old floor and put down new tile, and fitted the sink from downstairs.  What a difference!

The laundry room was also in a bad state.  The walls were not only poorly constructed, with joint tape and globs of plaster like a topographical map of the Himalayas, but there were also nail and screw holes everywhere.  The floor was green paint over linoleum tile.  There was (not surprisingly) some sketchy wiring.

Re-wiring the kitchen (yes, that is a live wire in the kitchen closet) involved Colin spending many an afternoon in the attic.  The tape measure is still somewhere up there, hidden under the insulation...

Colin looks on nervously as Dad laminates the old countertop.

Alyssa grouting the tile backsplash, and Colin installing new tile (and scraping off one layer of worn out vinyl squares).

Here is what the kitchen looks like now.  The cabinets and walls are painted, Colin installed new lighting fixtures, the origami cabinets and new microwave are in place, and the floor is finished.  We still need to do some finishing touches and work on the pantry door, but we're nearly there.
