St
Albans is on the site of the second largest Roman City in Britain,
Verulamium. Remains of a Roman amphitheatre, the city walls and
the hypocaust of a villa are all easily visible. The Abbey was
built on the site where Alban, a Roman citizen who protected a priest,
was executed. St Albans is one of a few cities to have a working
clock tower and is famous for having the highest number of pubs per
person in the UK.
